Wooden Play Shop Scales for Fruit & Vegetables

Wooden Play Shop Scales for Fruit & Vegetables give shopkeepers aged 3+ the step that comes before paying: the weighing. Apples, carrots and other play food go on the scales, a weight is called out, and the shopping moves on to the till. They stand 21 cm tall and weigh 0.77 kg.

What children do with the play scales from age 3

A customer arrives with a basket. The shopkeeper takes out three tomatoes and a pear, sets them on the scales, studies them with great seriousness and announces: "That's two kilos." Nobody argues. The shopping is handed back and the game moves on to paying. That is the whole job of these wooden play scales: weighing play food, fruit and vegetables before they reach the till.

It is a small step, yet it changes the game. Without it, a round of shops is often over in ten seconds: take, pay, leave. A weighing station on the counter gives everyone a reason to slow down, to sort the fruit from the vegetables, to queue, to ask "how much is that?" and to wait for the answer.

Heavy, light, more, less: first maths at the market stall

At 3, a child does not read a weight and does not need to. What they pick up is the vocabulary: heavy, light, more than, less than, the same. Let them hold a piece of play food in each hand first and guess which is heavier, then weigh both "to check". In this game, the number that matters is the one your child calls out.

From 4 or 5, numbers turn up on their own. A weight becomes a price ("two kilos, that's four pounds"), prices get added together, change is counted out. You can help by writing three or four price labels together and standing them next to the toy scales: children love having something official to point at.

A tip from our side of the counter: play the customer yourself, and be a slightly awkward one. Ask for "just one more carrot", or "a bit less, please". Every request sends the shopkeeper back to the scales, and that is where the counting and comparing happen.

18 x 9 x 21 cm: where the scales fit

The scales measure 18 x 9 x 21 cm. A base of 18 x 9 cm sits on the corner of a low table, on a shelf or on the counter of a market stall without pushing everything else off. At 0.77 kg they have real heft for a toy of this size: they stay put while small hands load them, and a 3-year-old can still carry them from the bedroom to the living room when the shop moves premises.

Wood does not like water. To clean the scales, wipe them with a soft, slightly damp cloth and dry them straight away; never soak them and keep them out of the dishwasher.

Which toys complete the game, and when to choose a pan balance

Scales on their own are fun for a few minutes; scales in the middle of a shop keep children busy for an afternoon. On our site, the natural partners are the Multifunctional Wooden Cash Register & Till for paying, the Wooden Market Grocery Bag with Play Food Essentials for carrying the shopping home, and the fruit and vegetables to slice that you will find among our role play kitchen accessories: they can be weighed whole, then cut up for dinner.

If your child wants to measure rather than pretend, look at a different kind of toy. The Roberval Balance Scale with Weights, for ages 5+, and the Blue Wooden Balance Scale with 4 Montessori Brass Weights are pan balances: an object is set against weights and the child works to bring the two sides level. The wooden play scales on this page belong to role play and to a younger age. Many families start here at 3 and move on to a balance with weights once the question "but how heavy is it really?" starts to come up. Both have their place among Montessori education toys: one for acting out everyday life, the other for measuring it.

Questions parents ask about the play scales

What age are the play shop scales suitable for?

They are made for children aged 3 and up. They contain small parts and are not suitable for children under 3, so keep them out of reach of younger brothers and sisters.

What can children weigh on the play scales?

Play food of all kinds, starting with fruit and vegetables as at the greengrocer's. Whatever is on sale in your child's shop that day can go on the scales before it is paid for.

How big are the wooden play scales?

They measure 18 x 9 x 21 cm and weigh 0.77 kg: compact enough for a small counter, heavy enough to stay where they are put.

Which toys go well with the play scales?

A till for paying, a grocery bag for the customer and play food to slice. With those three, your child has the full sequence: choose, weigh, pay, carry home.
