The five activities, one by one

Set it down on the rug and most toddlers go straight for whatever moves. Here, every side gives them something different to try:

  • Abacus: beads slide from one end of their rod to the other. At 18 months it is a pushing game; later on, you count them across together.
  • Bead maze: beads travel along a winding path, so the wrist has to turn while the hand keeps moving. It is the same idea as the bead maze toys sold on their own, built into the block.
  • Colour maze: your child guides the colours along the paths of the maze, a slower job that asks them to look before they push.
  • Shape sorter: each shape only goes through the opening that matches it. Expect a lot of turning and trying before the first one drops in.
  • Gears: turn one wheel and its neighbours turn with it, the first taste of cause and effect that makes gear toys so absorbing.

Why it is made for 18 months and up

Three movements run through this toy: sliding, posting and turning. A child of 18 months has the grip for all three, sits steadily on the floor and has the patience to try the same thing ten times in a row, which is exactly what a wooden activity centre asks for.

The play then changes without you buying anything new. Around two, the shape sorter stops being trial and error and your child starts choosing the right opening first time. Colours get named out loud on the colour maze. By three, the abacus becomes a real counting tool: "push three beads over, now one more".

A learning cube built on small, precise movements

Each skill here is tied to a movement your child repeats with their own hands:

  • Hand-eye coordination: following a bead round a bend while pushing it.
  • Fine motor skills: pinching a bead, rotating a shape until it fits, spinning a gear with one finger.
  • Colours and shapes: matching on the shape sorter and the colour maze, with you naming what they pick up.
  • First counting: one bead, two beads, all the beads, on the abacus.

A tip from the shop floor: do not show all five activities on day one. Turn one side towards your child, let them wear it out, then rotate the block a few days later. The toy feels new again, and each activity gets proper attention.

Triangle shape and real size: where it fits at home

It measures 40.79 x 24.2 x 22.3 cm, which is roughly the floor space of a boot box. The triangle outline is what sets it apart from a square block, and it means the toy is played with sitting on the floor rather than standing at it.

Put the wooden activity centre in the middle of a rug rather than against a wall, so your child can shuffle round to the next side. When play is over it slides under a console table or onto a low shelf, with no loose pieces to hunt for except the shapes from the sorter.

How it compares with the other cubes in our range

We stock several activity cubes, and the choice mostly comes down to space and theme:

  • The Deluxe Farm XL cube with stool is the big one: a piece of playroom furniture with a seat, for families who have room to leave it out.
  • The hexagonal cubes, Spring and Savannah, have six sides and a strong theme, garden or safari.
  • The Submarine cube is the pick for a child who loves anything to do with the sea.
  • This triangle wooden activity centre has no theme at all. It keeps to five classic activities in a small footprint, which makes it the easy choice for a flat, a shared bedroom or a grandparent's sitting room.

Wood, cleaning and guarantee

The block is made of wood, so it stays put when a toddler leans on it and copes with years of pushing and turning. To clean it, wipe the surfaces with a barely damp cloth and dry them straight away. Never soak it or leave it in a wet bathroom: wood swells.

It comes with our 2-year guarantee, like everything we sell.

Questions parents ask about this wooden activity centre

What age is a wooden activity centre for?

This one is for children from 18 months. Sliding and turning come first; sorting shapes by sight and counting on the abacus follow between two and three.

What are the 5 activities on the triangle cube?

An abacus, a bead maze, a colour maze, a shape sorter and a set of gears.

How big is it?

40.79 x 24.2 x 22.3 cm. It is a floor toy, small enough to carry from room to room.

Is it a Montessori cube?

Not in the strict sense: classic Montessori materials teach one skill at a time. It does share the same principles, though. It is wooden, nothing flashes or plays a tune, the shape sorter corrects itself and your child decides what to work on. It sits comfortably beside the other Montessori games in the shop.
