Montessori Brown Stair with Cards

The Montessori Brown Stair with Cards is a set of ten brown wooden pieces that a child aged 3 and over lines up from the thickest to the thinnest, until a staircase appears. The cards add a visual support to work from, and the whole exercise trains eye and hand to judge size.

Ten brown pieces and one staircase to build

Tip the ten wooden pieces onto a mat and at first they look like a jumble of brown blocks. Look again and no two have the same thickness. The task is simple to explain and absorbing to do: find the thickest piece and lay it down, find the next one and place it alongside, then carry on until the thinnest piece closes the row. Seen from the side, the row drops step by step like a flight of stairs, which is how the Brown Stair got its name.

Every piece is the same plain brown on purpose. With no colour, picture or number to give a clue, the only thing left to compare is size. That is what keeps a child looking so closely, and why the work stays interesting far longer than its plain appearance suggests.

The Brown Stair with Cards is made for children aged 3 and over. At that age a child can carry one piece at a time in both hands, has the patience to compare two pieces that look nearly alike, and takes real pride in a staircase built without help.

What a child learns by grading from thick to thin

The first thing at work is the eye. Telling the thickest piece from the thinnest is easy; telling the fifth from the sixth is not, and that is where the learning happens. The hand joins in too: the thickest piece fills both palms and feels heavy, while the thinnest can be lifted between finger and thumb. Size, dimension and weight are felt before they are ever named.

Then come the words. Once the staircase is built, you can touch two pieces and say "thick" and "thin", and later "thicker than", "thinner than", "the thickest", "the thinnest". These comparing words are hard to teach from a book and very easy to teach with a piece in each hand.

Finally, the Brown Stair quietly prepares the ground for maths. Ten pieces, each a little smaller than the one before, laid out in strict order: a child who has built that series many times has already met the ideas of sequence, of "one more" and "one less", and of a set of ten.

Where it sits among Montessori sensorial materials

Montessori sensorial materials each isolate a single quality so that a child can concentrate on it: one set varies in colour, another in sound, another in weight. The Brown Stair isolates thickness. It is usually offered alongside the Pink Tower, and the two are often mistaken for one another.

The difference shows as soon as they are in use. The Pink Tower is built upwards, one block on top of the other, and it either stands or tumbles. The Brown Stair is laid flat along the mat, piece beside piece, and the result is read from the side as a run of steps. One asks for a steady hand in the air, the other for a careful eye along the ground. They complement each other, and a child who knows both enjoys laying them out side by side to compare them. We also stock The Montessori Pink Tower with 10 Visual Cards, which you will find with the rest of our Montessori materials.

How to present the Brown Stair at home

A calm, slow first presentation makes all the difference. This is the sequence we suggest:

  • Unroll a mat on the floor and carry the pieces over one at a time, placing them in no particular order.
  • Pick out the thickest piece, without a word, and lay it at one end of the mat.
  • Look over the remaining pieces, choose the next thickest and set it tight against the first.
  • Continue down to the thinnest, then run a hand slowly along the steps from top to bottom.
  • Mix the pieces again and invite your child to have a turn.

Resist the urge to correct. The material does it for you: a piece in the wrong place breaks the regular line of steps, and a child sees the bump or the gap without being told. That control of error by sight is what lets children work on their own and try again willingly.

A tip from experience: if ten pieces seem too many at the start, offer only a few, chosen so the differences are obvious, and add the others over the following days. A short staircase built with confidence is worth more than a long one built with help.

What are the Brown Stair cards for?

What sets the Brown Stair with Cards apart from a plain set of pieces is the visual support the cards give to the work. Instead of copying an adult's demonstration, the child looks at a card and works from the picture, which is a step towards working independently. They are also a good way to bring the material back out once the basic staircase has become easy: a new picture to work from is often all it takes to renew interest.

We suggest keeping the cards aside for the first few sessions. Let your child discover the staircase with their hands first, then introduce the cards one at a time.

Questions parents ask about the Brown Stair

What is the Montessori Brown Stair?

It is a sensorial material made of ten brown wooden pieces of decreasing thickness. The child arranges them in order, from the thickest to the thinnest, to form a staircase.

What age is the Brown Stair for?

The Brown Stair with Cards is for ages 3 and up. It is not suitable for children under 36 months because it contains small parts. For other ideas at this age, see our guide to Montessori toys for 3 to 6 year olds.

What is the difference between the Pink Tower and the Brown Stair?

The Pink Tower is stacked upwards into a tower, while the Brown Stair is laid out flat to form steps. Both train a child to judge size, and they are often used together.

How do you present the Brown Stair?

Place the pieces in a random order on a mat, then build the staircase slowly from the thickest piece to the thinnest, without speaking. Mix them up and let your child try, leaving any mistakes for them to spot.

The set at a glance, storage and upkeep
