A 50 x 60 cm tree your child makes their own

Most Christmas makes are small: a bauble, a card, a paper chain. This one is a tree in felt measuring 50 x 60 cm, big enough for a child to kneel in front of and work on with both arms. Your child personalises it using the creative activities provided, and because every choice of colour and placement is theirs, each tree is unique.

It is a project, not a five-minute craft. The pleasure lies in coming back to it, seeing it fill up a little more each time, and finally showing it off to everyone who visits over the holidays.

Three crafts in one Christmas craft kit

The kit brings together three techniques, each with its own gesture and its own level of difficulty.

  • Felt embroidery: stitching through felt is slow, precise work. A 3 year old will need you to guide the stitches and can help by pulling the thread through; from 5 or 6, many children manage simple stitches themselves with an adult watching.
  • Diamond painting: picking up small sparkling pieces and pressing them into place one by one. Children find it absorbing and it is excellent practice for the pincer grip. The pieces are small, so sit alongside younger children throughout.
  • Painting: the freest of the three and the one a young child can do almost alone. Cover the table, roll up sleeves and let them choose the colours.

Among Christmas craft kits for kids, that mix is the real appeal: if one technique does not hold your child's attention, another usually does.

From age 3, and how it grows with an older child

The kit is suitable from 3 years. At that age, think of it as a shared activity: your child paints, places the sparkly pieces with you beside them, and watches or helps while you stitch. The tree is theirs because they decided what went where.

At 5, 6 and beyond, the balance shifts. An older child can plan the design, work more neatly, attempt the embroidery and spend longer at the table without losing interest. Brothers and sisters of different ages can share one tree, each taking the technique that suits them.

Spreading the making across the weeks before Christmas

Our advice is not to try to finish in one sitting. Keep one technique per session and stop while your child is still enjoying it. Let any paint dry fully before moving on, and keep the small pieces for diamond painting in a lidded pot between sessions so that nothing goes missing or ends up within reach of a baby.

A fixed slot helps, for instance after school on a Wednesday or on Sunday afternoon. The tree becomes a small ritual of the season, and the waiting for Christmas has something to show for it. Folded flat, it weighs only 400 g and tucks away in a drawer between sessions.

That is also why it works well when given early. As craft gifts for kids go, one opened at the start of December gets used when the excitement is highest, not lost among the presents on the day itself.

How it differs from our other felt craft kits and trees

Felt craft kits and felt trees are not all the same kind of toy, and the difference matters when you choose.

  • Our felt Christmas tree with 26 detachable ornaments is a game: the ornaments go on, come off and go back on, as often as your child likes.
  • The DIY Felt Christmas Tree Hanging Activity Kit and the DIY Clay Christmas Tree Hanging Decoration Kit produce decorations to hang.
  • This kit is a creative project on a large scale: once the tree is embroidered, painted and studded, it is finished, and it is your child's own work.

Choose the ornament tree for play that can be repeated, and this one for a child who loves to make things and keep them.

Questions about this craft kit

What crafts can children do with this Christmas craft kit?

Three: felt embroidery, diamond painting and painting, all used to personalise one large tree.

What age is the felt tree craft kit suitable for?

From 3 years. At 3 and 4 it is a project to share with an adult; from 5 or 6, children can do more of it on their own.

How big is the felt tree?

It measures 50 x 60 cm and weighs about 400 g.

Can a 3 year old do it on their own?

Not entirely. A 3 year old can paint with little help, but the embroidery and the small pieces used for diamond painting call for an adult at their side.
