Two ways to play: matching first, memory second

Start with all the cards face up on the table. Your child picks one, looks for its partner and says the link out loud: "big and small", "three dots and the number 3", "half past two". Once every pair is found without help, mix the cards, lay them face down and take turns turning two over. The same box then becomes a real memory game for the whole family.

Which box set to choose?

• Numbers: for a child who is starting to count and link a quantity with its figure.
• Opposites: hot and cold, full and empty; plenty to talk about, and a good set for building vocabulary.
• Telling Time: for children around 5 or 6 who are learning to read a clock face.
• Random: one of the themes, chosen for you, if you would like a surprise.

What a memory card game builds

Remembering where a card was a few turns ago trains attention and visual memory, and saying each pair out loud turns the game into language practice. Waiting for your turn and accepting a lost round are part of the lesson too. The idea of moving from the concrete (matching in plain sight) to the abstract (matching from memory) comes straight from the Montessori method.

Begin with six pairs only. A full set face down is a lot for a 3-year-old; add pairs as the game gets easier, and let your child win a few rounds at the start.

Like our wooden Montessori toys, the pairs are made to be handled again and again: each pair measures 12 x 6 x 0.5 cm, sturdy enough for small hands.
