A colour matching game asks a child to find the piece that looks exactly like this one: a tablet, a bee, a cylinder. This section brings together wooden colour tablets, matching puzzles and rainbow stackers for children from age 1, plus paints for putting new colours to use.

Colour sorting toys for the youngest

From 1 year, a rainbow stacker is the gentlest start. Your child lifts the arches off, puts them back in any order, and slowly notices which colour sits next to which. The XXL stacker comes with 2 balls to roll under the arches, and the pastel blue stacking clown turns colour into a little figure to build piece by piece.

Pairing and grading with Montessori colour tablets

Colour tablets are among the classic Montessori teaching toys. From 3 years, Colour Box 1 holds the primary colours in pairs: mix the tablets on a mat, lift one, and invite your child to find its twin. Colour Box 2 moves on to 11 pairs, and the 63-shade box, from 4 years, asks for something harder: lining up the shades of one colour from darkest to lightest. Show your child how to hold each tablet by its wooden edges so the colour faces stay clean.

The colour matching cylinder puzzle and the beehive with its colour matching bees add a second challenge: the piece must match the colour and fit its own place, which keeps small fingers busy as well as eyes. Once colours are easy, the counting and maths matching game uses the same pairing idea with numbers.

From naming colours to painting with them

When a child can name and sort colours, painting is the next step. The watercolour paint boxes with 12 colours, liquid gouache and the wooden palette with brushes let them mix two colours and watch a third appear. Washable bath crayons bring the same game to bath time, one colour name at a time on the tiles.

Whichever you pick, start these Montessori toys with only two colours on the table. Add a third once the first pair is easy, so the game stays a success rather than a guess.
