Multifunctional Wooden Cash Register & Till

Playing shop with a kids' till

Set the till on a low table, line up a few tins and pieces of fruit, and the game starts by itself. Your child scans each item, taps a price on the keys, takes your note and counts out the change. Then you swap roles: being the customer is just as much fun at this age.

The bell rings as the drawer slides open, which children love, and the paper roll lets them hand over a receipt at the end. The card reader sits alongside for customers who would rather pay by card, just like at the supermarket.

What a child's cash till teaches from age 3

Handing over coins and getting change back is a first, very concrete brush with numbers. At 3 the coins are mostly for sorting and counting; by 5 or 6 many children start adding up small totals and checking the change. Playing shop also builds conversation: greeting, asking for an item, saying please and thank you.

Pressing the keys, swiping the card and feeding the paper roll all call for careful finger work, and holding the scanner steady over each label takes a little patience too.

Getting the most out of the toy till

Start with three or four items priced at 1, 2 or 5 and a handful of coins. Add the notes and bigger prices once your child counts confidently. A sturdy toy till like this one is also a good reason to set up a corner shop with a basket and a few labelled tins, alongside other wooden Montessori toys for pretend play.
