Montessori Washable Bath Crayons Set

The bathroom wall is a surprisingly good place to draw. It sits at your child's eye level, it is big enough for whole-arm circles, and nobody minds a mistake because water takes it away in seconds. Children who fidget at the table often settle happily in the bath with a crayon in hand.

Drawing on the tiles at bathtime

Start with something your child already knows: a sun, a fish swimming along the edge of the tub, a big wobbly house. Then let them take over. A nice game is to draw a path between two tiles and ask them to follow it with their own colour, or to write the first letter of their name and let them copy it beside yours.

Working on an upright surface asks the shoulder, elbow and wrist to work together, which is a useful warm-up before holding a pencil at a table. Because the marks wash off, children feel free to try again and again.

Are bath crayons toxic?

These crayons are made as a children's toy for drawing in the bath and on tiles, and they wash away with water. They are not meant to be chewed, so stay close by during bathtime and put them back in their box once the bath is over, out of reach of younger brothers and sisters.

Washing off and storing

Draw on smooth, glazed surfaces such as ceramic tiles and enamel or acrylic tubs; avoid grout and porous stone, which hold on to colour. A damp sponge or cloth is enough to clear the slate. Let the crayons dry before closing the box so they keep their shape.

Give the box a fixed spot on a shelf by the bath, within your child's reach but not a toddler sibling's: fetching the crayons and putting them back unaided is the same small independence our Montessori toys are chosen for.
