Children's Liquid Gouache Paint 250ml

What is gouache paint?

Gouache is a water-based paint, close to watercolour but much more opaque: one layer covers the paper rather than letting it show through, and it dries to a soft matt finish. It can be thinned with a little water for washes or used thick for strong, flat colour.

From the first brushstroke to mixing colours

Young painters tend to start by covering the whole sheet with one colour, then discover what happens when yellow runs into blue. Because the paint is liquid, a three-year-old can dip a chunky brush or a sponge without having to work the colour up first, and the strokes stay bright once dry.

Pour only a small amount at a time into a palette or a jar lid: children use less than you think, and the bottle stays clean. A sheet of thick paper or card holds up better than printer paper under a wet brush.

Building a gouache paint set colour by colour

Each bottle holds one colour, chosen from black, white, red, yellow, blue and green, or a colour picked at random. With red, yellow, blue and white alone, a child can already mix oranges, purples, greens and pastel shades; add black later for darker tones.

Set up a small painting tray with the bottles, brushes and a cloth, and let your child pour, paint and rinse their own brush. That little routine of preparing and tidying is as much part of the activity as the painting, and it is the same do-it-myself spirit found in our wooden Montessori toys.

Once a picture is finished, leave it to dry flat: a thick layer of liquid gouache can still run if the sheet is hung up wet.
