Musical Triangle with Wooden Striker

How a child plays the musical triangle

Your child holds the loop in one hand so the triangle hangs freely, then taps the outside with the striker. A light tap gives a soft chime, a firmer one a bright, ringing note. The surprise comes when they grip the metal with their hand: the sound stops at once. Children love playing with that contrast, letting a note ring, then cutting it short.

For a faster rhythm, show them how to place the striker inside the corner and move it quickly from side to side: the triangle then rolls out a continuous trill.

What is the triangle musical instrument called?

It is simply called a triangle. It belongs to the percussion family, as an instrument that sounds when its own body vibrates, with no skin or string. The little rod used to strike it is called a beater or striker; here it is made of wood, for a gentler sound than a metal one.

A listening game to try at home

Strike the triangle once and ask your child to raise a hand only when they can no longer hear anything. The room goes quiet, and they often realise the note lasts much longer than they thought. It is a calm activity before a story or at the end of a busy afternoon, and a natural companion to other Montessori wooden toys on the music shelf.
