How to play a guiro instrument with a young child

The guiro comes from Latin America, where it keeps the beat alongside maracas and drums. Among musical instruments, guiro rasps are one of the quickest to reward a child: there is nothing to blow and no note to find, only a stick to scrape.

Start by showing two strokes, one long and slow, one short and fast, and let your child copy them. Then turn it into a game of echoes: you clap a simple rhythm, they answer on the guiro. Once scraping feels easy, show the other sounds it hides, such as tapping the hollow body with the stick or scraping only halfway down for a shorter phrase.

What the scraping gesture teaches a three-year-old

A guiro percussion instrument asks a lot of two small hands: keeping the body steady while the other hand moves the stick means each hand does a different job at once. Children also hear straight away how speed and pressure change the sound, which is where listening to rhythm begins. Playing along to a favourite song, they soon learn to slow down or speed up with the music.
