Montessori Felt Christmas Tree with 26 Detachable Ornaments

The childhood Christmas tree they decorate themselves

On the family tree, little hands are usually told not to touch. Here it is the other way round: the felt shapes cling to the felt tree with a light press and come away with a gentle pull, so your child can dress the tree, strip it bare and start again ten times in one afternoon. Nothing breaks if a decoration ends up on the floor.

Hang it in the bedroom or playroom on the first day of Advent, low enough for your child to reach the tip, and it becomes their first Christmas tree, set up and looked after by them.

Small decorations, careful fingers

Picking up a flat felt shape and placing it exactly where they want takes a pinch between thumb and finger and a steady eye. Children soon set their own little challenges: all the red ones at the top, a star at the very tip, the same shapes in a row. Talk about what they are doing as they go, naming colours and counting the pieces, and the play turns into a quiet sorting game.

Which version for your kids' Christmas tree?

• Tree with 26 decorations: about 50 x 70 cm once decorated, for free arranging and rearranging.
• Tree with craft activities: about 50 x 60 cm, for children who like to make as well as decorate.

The felt tree folds flat once the season is over, ready to come out again next year. Like the Montessori education toys on their shelf, it works best when your child can reach it without asking: no grown-up needed to add a star or move a bauble.
