Magnetic Wooden Fishing Game with 2 Rods & Dice

How to play: hook each fish, magnetic rod in hand

• Scatter the six sea creatures on the table or the floor, face up.
• The first player rolls the colour die.
• They lower the magnet over a creature of that colour and lift it out without touching it.
• Play passes to the next player. When the sea is empty, whoever has caught the most wins.

The magnet hangs from the end of the rod, so it swings a little. Your child soon learns that a slow, steady hand catches faster than a quick jab.

Children's fishing games for two players or more

With two rods in the box, a brother and sister can fish side by side, or you can play against your child. With three or four players, simply pass the rods round. Along the way, children name the colours, count their catch at the end and learn to wait for their turn, which is often the hardest part at 3 years old.

Among children's fishing toys, this one is small enough to go anywhere: a café table, a train journey or a rainy afternoon at the holiday cottage.

A tip for the youngest players

For a first game, leave the die in the bag and let your child fish freely, just for the pleasure of hearing the magnet click. Once every creature comes up easily, bring in the die and the colour rule. Older children can play kneeling a step back from the table, which makes each toy fishing rod much harder to control.

Like many wooden Montessori toys, it asks for a precise hand and a calm mind rather than speed, in the spirit of the Montessori method.
