Wooden Animal Handle Children's Skipping Rope

Learning to skip, one step at a time

Few children manage a real skip on day one, and that is perfectly normal. Start with the rope lying on the ground behind your child: they swing it over their head, let it land in front, then simply step across. When that feels easy, they try a little jump as the rope touches the ground. The steady two-footed bounce comes later, often all at once after a week of practice.

Counting out loud helps enormously. Once a child can manage five jumps in a row, playground rhymes such as Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear give them a beat to follow and a reason to keep going.

Getting the length right on a kids skipping rope

A rope that is too long drags and tangles; one that is too short catches the feet. Ask your child to stand on the middle of the rope: the handles should come up to around their armpits. If they reach higher, tie a knot under each handle to shorten it, and undo it as they grow.

A child's skipping rope with handles for small hands

The rounded wooden handles are thicker than thin plastic grips, so they are easier to hold firmly while the arms turn. Each one is shaped like an animal (the design varies), which gives the rope a little character and makes it easy to spot at the bottom of the toy box.

It makes a lively outdoor partner to our Montessori wooden toys, for the days when a child needs to move rather than sit.
