Wooden stacking toys are often the first thing a baby builds alone: watch them stack the rings, one on, two off, then suddenly a whole tower. This shelf runs from classic ring towers at 12 months to rainbow stackers, nesting houses and peg games for ages 3+.
Ring tower or rainbow stacker: where to start
A stacking rings toy on a central pole is the easiest start among Montessori wooden toys. The pole guides each ring down, so even a one-year-old gets a result. Ours come as a rocket, a lighthouse, a clown, a safari tiger and cheerful animal designs. A rainbow stacker has no pole at all: its arches rock, nest and stand up as tunnels, bridges or a cradle for a small figure. The giant XXL version comes with two balls to roll underneath.
How to stack rings: showing your baby
Take every ring off together, thread the largest back on in one smooth, unhurried movement, then hand your child the next one. Order doesn't matter at first: most babies thread rings at random for weeks before noticing that the biggest belongs at the bottom. When they do, the tower stands straight and the idea has clicked.
Nesting houses, block towers and peg games
Nesting toys work the other way round: the orange cottage and the pastel animal houses fit one inside another, then come out again to make a little street. Block towers such as the safari and polar ice floe sets ask for more balance, as nothing holds the pieces in place. From age 3, the Montessori dowel sets and the Logisteck colour peg base add sorting by size and colour.
When the tower becomes too easy, keep the pole aside and pass the rings over from a small basket, asking for “the biggest one” or “the red one”. The same stacker turns into a game of sizes and words long after the tower itself is easy.
